I spent hours upon hours staying up tonight watching different movies, short films, etc. I really enjoy Harmony Korine one of the writers of KIDS, although I don’t always understand him. At first I saw this “Act Da Fool” for PS1 and I thought it was extremely racist. But then… I got it. I think I got it. Dissecting the fashion industry in its core: it’s just a bunch of bullshit marketing you to like what they like. Fashion is everywhere. Life is everywhere. Death comes to everything. I’m not trying to sound like a tool, but it spoke to me. loudly.

Why Am I A Film Student?

This is a question that has been asked of me lately with more and more frequency. Before answering this very legitimate question I think I should state two disclaimers. The first one being that I’m not really a film student. I take a film production class at school and the most I’ve ever produced was a two minute short that involved a sophomore at my school doing an impromptu dance in our film class. So, I’m not really much is going on there. The second disclaimer is that when this question is asked it is usually in reference to the fact that I have seen -2 movies in my entire life. I know why I take film, because I love movies and have a deep inclination to make them one day. I think the real question is why haven’t I seen more movies?

As I was watching the Golden Globes last night it hit me that I’m really behind on what we be equivalent to required reading in the movie world. Robert De Niro got some sort of award for being the best actor ever and they showed a montage of his career. I realized,  to my embarrassment that the only Robert De Niro film I had ever seen was Goodfellas. That would be a forgivable offense if I at least had basic knowledge of his career. I tried to reason with myself by saying that he mainly plays in mafioso/mobster movies and that’s not really my thing. So that explains why I haven’t seen The Godfather or Mean Streets, but there are other movies that I have no valid excuse for not having seen. Like The Wizard of Oz, which comes on every year around Thanksgiving without fail. Last night this movie came up in a conversation with Tally and she asked me if I had at least seen The Wiz. Of course I hadn’t seen that either and only vaguely knew what it was, but I saw Wicked on Broadway. That’s gotta count for something, right?

Recently I’ve been watching all of these critically acclaimed or underground movies, but I think it’s time to get back to basics. I’m going to force myself to watch films that should be in my personal repertoire, but have somehow slipped through the cracks. This list will include, but will not be limited to:

Taxi Driver

The Godfather (Dear god, why am I signing myself up for this one?)

Pulp Fiction

Breakfast From Tiffany’s (This may be the death of me.)

Casablanca

Gone With The Wind

The Wizard Of Oz

Blade Runner

It’s A Wonderful Life

Psycho

The Shawshank Redemption (I think I might read the book first.)

I think that’s good start. If i can watch all of these in the near future I’ll be well on my way to being a more legitimate film student.
